53024 12th (Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry) Battalion Manchester Regiment
Frederick Abbott was born in 1881 in Chelmsford, Essex, the son of Thomas and Eliza Abbott. His father was a coppersmith and the family lived in School Street, Sudbury. His father died in 1894 and in 1906 his mother married Charles Henry Keeble. Frederick was employed as a butcher’s assistant and lived with the family in Upper East Street.
He enlisted in Chesterfield, Derbyshire serving with the Army Service Corps (formerly T4/275636) before transferring to the Manchester Regiment. The battalion formed part of 52nd Brigade, 17th Division. The German Army launched their Spring Offensive (Operation Michael) on 21 March 1918. This was a vast attack along the whole Somme sector front with the aim to destroy the British Army. The Germans advanced quickly and deeply with heavy losses for the Allies. Frederick’s battalion saw action in the First Battle of Bapaume (24–25 March).
Frederick died aged 36 on 26 March 1918. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
A Cross of Remembrance was laid close to his name on the Arras Memorial in March 2007 and October 2011
