26065 9th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment
Percy Beevis was born around 1890 in Romford, Essex, one of eight children of Albert and Emily Beevis. His father was a tailor and the family lived at 87 East Street, before moving to 17 Upper East Street. At the age of 21 Percy like his father was employed as a tailor.
Percy was living in Berkhampstead when he enlisted in Watford to serve with the Bedfordshire Regiment (formerly 26184) before being transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. His four brothers also served, one was reported as wounded in April 1917.
Percy’s battalion formed part of 74th Brigade, 25th Division; on 14 July they saw action in the second phase of the Battle of the Somme at the Battle of Bazentin Ridge (14-17 July). There was a dawn attack against the enemy from Delville Wood westwards towards Bazentin-le-Petit Wood which was successful; however the attempt to then attack High Wood failed resulting in heavy casualties. Percy died aged 26 on 14 July 1916. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Percy married Beatrice Mead in 1915, after his death she remarried and moved to Lowestoft.
A Cross of Remembrance was laid at the Thiepval Memorial in April 2006 and April 2009.
