Gunner Frank Bridgman

28786 86th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery

Frank Bridgman was born in Sudbury around 1887, the son of William and Sarah Ann Bridgman. His father was carter for a coal yard and the family lived at
43 Church Yard, Church Street before moving to 27 Station Road. His parents later moved to 11 East Street.

At the age of 14 Frank was employed as an errand boy before he enlisted in Colchester as a regular soldier to serve with the Royal Garrison Artillery. In 1911 he was stationed with No. 86 Heavy Battery RGA in Peshawar on the North West Frontier, India (now the borders between Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Frank first served in a ‘theatre of war’ in Asia on 10 March 1915. It is highly probable that he was at the siege of Kut-al-Amara (7 December 1915 – 29 April 1916) when the 8,000 strong British – Indian garrison at the town of Kut was besieged by the Ottoman Army.

He died aged 29 on 15 February 1916 and lies buried in Kut War Cemetery, Iraq. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
