43840 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment
Frederick Daniels was born in Sudbury around 1890, one of ten surviving children of Harry and Achsah Daniels. His father was a gardener and general labourer and the family lived at 15 Burkitts Lane, before moving to 1 Garden Row.
Frederick was employed as a groom, was married and had two children. He was living in Swadlincote, Derbyshire when he enlisted and served with the South Staffordshire Regiment (formerly 32195). It is not known when he transferred to the Essex Regiment which formed part of 12th Brigade, 4th Division.
Frederick was killed in action on 12 August 1918 and lies buried in Mont-Bernanchon British Cemetery, Gonnehem, France. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
A Cross of Remembrance was laid by Frederick’s grave in June 2015. Less than two months later his younger brother Harry died of fever serving with the Army Service Corps in Egypt. He is also remembered on the Sudbury War Memorial.
