Sapper Charles George Holt

George Charles Holt, known as Charles was born around 1888 in Yardley. He had an older brother Edward and an older sister Gertrude. He married Maud Alice Seeley in St Stephen’s Church, Hammersmith on 29 April 1915 and was employed as a carriage cleaner on the railways.

Charles and Maud were living in Hammersmith when he enlisted in November 1915 at Shepherds Bush and served with the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers. He was mobilised to serve overseas on 15 August 1916.

Charles was admitted to Frensham Hill Military Hospital in Surrey on 21 January 1917 due to very severe ulceration of his mouth. His condition worsened and he failed to respond to any stimulation. He died of septicemia and stomatitis (mouth ulcers) in the early hours of 31 January 1917 age 29 and is buried in Hammersmith Old Cemetery.

After his death his widow Maud, who had been born in Long Melford returned to Sudbury and lived in Clarence Road with their daughter Kathleen Frances Maud who was born in April 1917.
