GS/26674 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers
Charles Mathew was born in 1887 in Sudbury, one of eleven children of James and Harriet Mathew. His father was a farm labourer and the family lived at 22 Middleton Road, Ballingdon before moving to Red Cottages in Foxearth.
Before the outbreak of war he had been employed at one time at the Capital and Counties Bank and then later at Jay’s Painters and Decorators in Station Road.
Charles enlisted in Sudbury and served with the Royal Fusiliers. In 1916 he went to the front straight from the Duke of York’s training school in Dover. His battalion formed part of 17th Brigade, 6th Division and in the autumn of 1916 saw action on the Somme at the Battles of Fler-Courcelette (15 – 22 September), Morval (25 – 28 September) and Le Transloy (1 – 10 October).
Charles was killed in action on 29 March 1917. He lies buried in Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
A Cross of Remembrance was laid by his grave in March 2007 and October 2011.
