George Mauldon was born in Sudbury on 8 August 1892, the son of Christie Edwin and Alice Emily Mauldon, of Ballingdon, Sudbury. His father was Mayor of Sudbury in 1892, 1893 and 1904 and from the Mauldon Brewery family. His father was the hotel keeper and brewer of The Bull Inn, Church Street. After leaving Sudbury Grammar School George trained as a farmer on his aunt and uncle’s farm (John and Edith Orbell); Wood Street Farm at Ixworth near Bury St. Edmunds.
The family, believe that George enlisted in Woodbridge after receiving white feathers. He first served with the 1/1st Suffolk Yeomanry (formerly 1686). The squadron embarked in Liverpool onboard SS Olympic in September 1915, landing at Gallipoli on 10 October. They were evacuated to Egypt in December 1915. The Suffolk Yeomanry was normally a mounted battalion, but they lost their horses and were converted to an infantry battalion in January 1917 when more infantry was needed to fight the Turks in Palestine at Beersheba and they were renamed 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, forming part of 230th Brigade, 74th (Yeomanry) Division.
George’s battalion saw action during the Second Battle of Gaza (17 – 19 April 1917) and at the Third Battle of Gaza (27 October – 7 November 1917) when the Allies successfully captured the town of Beersheba on 31 October and the Sheria Position on 6 November. George served alongside Frederick Thompson who lost his life on the same day as George.
George was killed in action on 6 November 1917 aged 25 and lies buried in Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
George is also remembered on his parents’ grave in Sudbury Cemetery and on the Ixworth War Memorial.
