Rifleman Frank Mixer

10208 3rd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps

Frank Mixer was born in1893 in Sudbury, one of seven surviving children of George and Emily Mixer. His father was employed as an ironmoulder and the family lived in Newmans Road. By 1911 his widowed mother had moved to Acton Lane and Frank was living in Cavendish Buildings, Clerkenwell Road in London employed as a lift attendant.

Frank first served in ‘a theatre of war’ (France) on 20 December 1914. It is very likely that he was a regular soldier with the battalion which in August 1914 was in Meerut in India. The battalion returned to England on 18 November and embarked for France landing at Le Havre on 21 December 1914.

The battalion formed part of 80th Brigade, 27th Division and between January and February 1915 were in Belgium. In January they marched to Fletre and Dickebusch and began tours of the trenches near Vierstraat. On 14 February they left billets and advanced to Voormezeele where they later attacked the trenches near Shelley Farm where they suffered casualties one of which was Frank.

Frank was killed in action on 15 February 1915. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

A Cross of Remembrance was laid at the Menin Gate in April 2006, April 2009 and October 2012.
