Lance Sergeant Ernest Morgan

201966 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment

Ernest Morgan was born in Malta, (recorded as ‘Edward’ on the original Roll of Honour and medal card). He enlisted in Sudbury and served with the Suffolk Regiment (formerly 3090). It is not known when he joined his battalion.

Ernest’s battalion formed part of 98th Brigade, 33rd Division; in the spring of 1917 the Division saw action during the Battle of Arras (9 April – 16 June) at the First Battle of the Scarpe (9 – 14 April) and the Second Battle of the Scarpe (23 – 24 April). The Division then moved across the border into Belgium and saw action during the Third Battle of Ypres, more commonly known as Passchendaele (31 July – 10 November) at the Battles of the Menin Road Ridge (20 – 25 September) and Polygon Wood (26 September – 3 October).

After Polygon Wood the battalion was in and out of the line along the Passchendaele Ridge, resting at Poperinghe went not in the trenches.

Ernest was killed in action on 23 November 1917. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, near Ypres, Belgium. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

A Cross of Remembrance was laid at the Tyne Cot Memorial in April 2006 and April 2009.
