15990 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards
Walter Patrick was born in 1897 in Hundon, Suffolk and was the only son of William and Henrietta Patrick. His father was a tailor and his mother a dressmaker.
In 1901 Walter was living with his widowed mother and two sisters, Ethel and Elsie in Church Street, Hundon. By 1911 the family had moved 28 King Street in Sudbury where his mother ran a boarding house.
Walter enlisted in Colchester and served with the Scots Guards. His battalion formed part of 3rd Guards Brigade, Guards Division. It is not known when he joined his battalion which in the summer of 1917 saw action in the opening phase of the Third Battle of Ypres (31 July – 10 November) at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge (31 July – 2 August).
Walter was killed in action on 5th August 1917. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Walter is also remembered on the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.
A Cross of Remembrance was laid at the Menin Gate in April 2006, April 2009 and October 2012.
