Private Bertram Radley

Kings Liverpool Regiment

Bertram Radley was born in Borley, Essex in 1889, one of twelve children of Brand and Ellen Radley. His father was an agricultural labourer. In 1891 the family was living at The Cottage, Borley Green, Borley. By 1901 his father had died and the family had moved to 15 School Street in Sudbury. His sister Bessie was employed as a corset maker, his brothers: Samuel as a gardener and Sidney as a house boy.

By the age of 21 Bertram had moved to Norwich and was a boarder at 15 Palace Street, a Church Army Labour Home run by Thomas Thorne, and Bertram was employed as a ‘labourer making firewood bundles’.

It is not known when he enlisted but the family believes Bertram was 26 when he was killed. Bert is also remembered on Baptist Church Memorial in Church Street.

No further information of Bertram has been found at the present time.
