Map 15. Quay - Allen's brickworks
From the long curved warehouse on the Quay Basin, now the Quay Theatre, to the sprawl of brickfields opposite Friars Meadow. Allen’s brickworks grew up here because there were suitable local clays, and coal could be brought in and bricks taken away via the River Stour Navigation. Note the cut off the main river here which also allowed lighters to continue up under Middleton Road into the chalk pit to load lime. LXXIX.3.9
